This week is National Skilled Trades and Technology Week, and we’re celebrating the real people building Ontario’s future through ApprenticeSearch.com’s Gateway to the Trades, funded by Ontario’s Skills Development Fund.

For Daniel, breaking into the trades wasn’t for lack of trying. He had drive, determination, and a clear goal — but no matter how many applications he sent, the door wouldn’t open.
“I applied to over 150 jobs and heard nothing,” Daniel said.
Like many job seekers eager to start their careers in the skilled trades, Daniel was ready to work but missing the essentials that employers look for — recognized safety certifications, industry experience, and access to proper protective equipment. These practical barriers often stand between motivated workers and meaningful employment.
That’s where ApprenticeSearch.com’s Gateway to the Trades program, funded by Ontario’s Skills Development Fund (SDF), steps in. The program helps bridge the gap between motivation and readiness by providing tailored coaching, safety certifications, and support for essential work gear.
“Now, with my certifications from the Gateway to the Trades program, I’ve been hired,” Daniel said. “It’s truly an awesome program.”
Today, Daniel is working full-time as a skilled labourer, gaining valuable experience and confidence with every shift. He’s now on a clear path toward an apprenticeship - and a long-term career in the trades.
Ontario’s construction and maintenance industries are projected to add nearly 90,000 jobs by 2030, but employers consistently cite “job readiness” as a major hiring challenge. Programs like Gateway to the Trades help ensure that candidates like Daniel don’t just have the will, they have the tools, training, and support to succeed.
“For me,” Daniel shared, “Gateway wasn’t just training — it was a turning point.”
Daniel’s story reminds us that sometimes the biggest barriers aren’t about ability or attitude - they’re about access. With the right support, those barriers disappear, and potential turns into opportunity.

Every story like this is part of a much bigger picture. Through ApprenticeSearch.com’s Gateway to the Trades, more than 1,480 people have been hired into skilled trades roles, and over 650 have started apprenticeships across Ontario.
The program helps remove real barriers — from the cost of safety gear and tools to the confidence gap that comes with starting something new. Participants get coaching, certifications, and support that help them not only get hired but stay employed.
With an 80% employment rate and over $1.3 million in industry contributions leveraged to date, Gateway continues to show that when we invest in people, good things happen — for job seekers, employers, and Ontario’s skilled trades community.
