What does a Appliance Service Technician (445A) do?

Appliance Service Technicians install, repair, service, and maintain a variety of domestic appliances and household products.

  • Reading and interpreting work orders, diagrams, specifications, and manuals to prepare job
  • Safely using hand and power tools, measuring devices, and testing equipment to diagnose problems and verify/test corrective actions taken
  • Performing customer service functions including resolving business enquiries, preparing cost estimates, cleaning and inspecting work sites, and demonstrating operation of the products
  • Selecting/inspecting refrigeration sealed systems equipment; recovery equipment; measuring devices; and soldering, brazing, and welding equipment for domestic appliances
  • Diagnosing, maintaining, adjusting, and repairing electronic control and component systems, natural gas systems, electrical systems, incoming water and water discharge systems, static and forced air systems, and sealed systems of domestic appliances
  • Developing knowledge of environmental legislation, hazardous materials, codes of practice, and domestic appliance product standards; keeping up-to-date with new technologies and regulatory changes
  • Effectively working and communicating with co-workers and customers

What Preparation and Training Do You Need?

  • Secondary school diploma with math, drafting, electronics, chemistry or physics, and English credits; enrolment in OYAP may be an asset
  • Completion of a 6,000-hour apprenticeship, including a combination of on-the-job and in-school training
  • Exam to obtain Certificate of Qualification
