• Reviewing work orders and discussing work to be performed with supervisor
• Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing:
  • Electrical systems
  • Landing gear assemblies and trailer frames
  • Hitching/coupling systems
  • Trailer bodies
  • Suspension systems
  • Tires, wheels, hubs, and axles
  • Air and auxiliary systems, braking systems, heating and refrigeration systems, hydraulic systems, and ventilation devices
• Using hand tools and specialized diagnostic equipment to diagnose, isolate, and repair faults
• Performing scheduled maintenance service
• Testing and adjusting repaired systems to manufacturer performance specifications
• Advising customers on work performed, general trailer condition, and future work required
• Communicating effectively with co-workers, customers, and service managers
• Reading and interpreting owner/operator/manufacturer manuals and service specifications
• Keeping up-to-date on technology and upgrading skills as required

• Secondary school diploma or equivalent; math and English credits an asset
• Co-op, pre-apprenticeship, or technical courses would be helpful
• Completion of 4,480-hour apprenticeship, including on-the-job and in-school training
• Exam to obtain Certificate of Qualification

• Full-time, year-round work with single employer; some may work in mobile units
• Exposure to pollutants like noise, liquids, fumes, and odours; risk of injury from heavy equipment
• Employers include trailer manufacturers; sales and repair facilities or garages; and municipally, provincially, or privately owned trucking, bus, and transportation companies

Apprentice wage increases with skill and experience. Fully qualified workers earn an average of $28.00-$42.00 per hour.
