What does a Mould Designer (670E) do?

The Mould Designer apprenticeship will only be granted to an individual who has successfully completed a Certificate of Qualification for Mould Maker (431A). In addition to a Certificate of Qualification, the candidate must have on-the-job experience as a journeyperson. Mould designers may specialize in any of the following: compression, transfer, blow, extrusion, thermal set injection, thermal plastic injection, vacuum, or die cast moulds.

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and other product-related diagrams, charts, or tables
  • Reading and interpreting a piece-part drawing and analyzing for mouldability/manufacturability
  • Conveying information to CAD Programs/System
  • Determining type of mould; designing layout of mould components and sequence of openings
  • Creating detailing and dimensioning of mould designs
  • Finalizing drawings or designs and implementing construction
  • Archiving/maintaining accurate files

What Preparation and Training Do You Need?

  • Secondary school diploma; chemistry, physics, math, and computer tech or industrial crafts credits
  • Completion of a 4,000-hour apprenticeship, including on-the-job and in-school training
  • Must have completed Mould Maker apprenticeship to be eligible for this one

What's Your Future as a Mould Designer (670E)?

  • Full-time, sometimes in shifts; usually indoors in foundries or production shops
  • Some overtime may be necessary to meet production deadlines
  • Employers include steel foundries, grey iron foundries, malleable iron foundries, and brass foundries (bronze and aluminum)

Apprentice wage increases with skills and expertise. Fully qualified workers earn an average of $20.00-$30.00+ per hour.
