What does a Facilities Technician (255B) do?

Facilities Technicians handle the maintenance, inspection, and repair of the interior and exterior of buildings and complexes. They are responsible for various facility systems, including the ventilator, humidifier and air conditioning, water and water treatment, heating, and electrical systems. Facilities Technicians also inspect and verify emergency power and fire suppression systems.

Reading and interpreting blueprints, work orders, and schematics; reading/understanding code books, manuals, manufacturer specifications, log books, inspection sheets, and warranties

Inspecting fire safety equipment; maintaining electrical, air conditioning, plumbing, water treatment, ventilation, domestic appliance, and laundry systems
Maintaining and troubleshooting roofing; setting up and operating arc and oxyacetylene welding equipment to plan out, organize, and complete welding operations
Inspecting exterior grounds; cleaning up and maintaining ground facilities
Effectively communicating with fellow workers, supervisors, contractors, clients, etc.

What Preparation and Training Do You Need?

Secondary school diploma required; math, science, and English credits recommended
OYAP, co-op, or technical credits in Electrical or Welding would be definite asset
Completion of a 7,520-hour apprenticeship, including on-the-job and in-school training

What's Your Future as a Facilities Technician (255B)?

Full-time; evening, weekend, or emergency work possible
Indoor/outdoor; depending on where maintenance is needed

Apprentice wage increases with skill and experience. Fully qualified workers average $19.00 per hour.
